10 Patient Safety Rules

1. Write down and always carry a list of all your current medications and dosages

2. Carry the names and numbers of all important doctors

3. Have the name and contact information of at least one person who can speak to the doctor on your behalf

4. Always get a second opinion for major diagnoses and operations.

5. Check out the background of your doctor at your state’s Health Department (NYS Department of Health (link to this page).

6. Never be afraid to ask your doctor questions so that you understand completely.

7. Observe the healthcare provider’s office, examination rooms, waiting rooms, and personnel for cleanliness and if the equipment looks clean and medical personnel wash their hands. Do not be reluctant to voice your concerns to the doctor or medical staff.

8. Tell your doctor ALL your complaints, symptoms and allergies or adverse reactions to medications you may have taken in the past.

9. When taking medications, immediately contact your health care professional if you experience any side effects or symptoms.

10. Always check your prescription at the pharmacy before you leave to make sure it is correct.
